The use of SMS Services continues to decline among Austrians. “In the RTR Telecom Monitor for the 2nd quarter of 2012, we reported the unique peak value for Austria of around 2000 million SMS sent. More than ten years later, it is ‘only’ 284 million SMS sent in Austria in Q3 2022,” Klaus M. Steinmaurer, RTR’s managing director for the Telecommunications and Post Division, said on Friday.

The decline is mainly due to the heavy use of messenger services. “The downward trend in SMS services will continue, but they are not currently threatened with extinction,” Steinmaurer said. The reason for this is that SMS works on any cell phone, does not require an Internet connection and does not require a separate login. “That makes SMS still indispensable at present, for example, as a back-up solution for authentication procedures for online banking and the like,” Steinmauer said.

In Q3 2022, 1.36 million fixed-network lines (VoB) implemented via broadband were also registered, around seven percent more than in Q3 2021. Traditional fixed-network lines (POTS, ISDN, Multi-ISDN) accounted for 821,000, a decline of around 18 percent – compared with Q3 2021.
